How are hundreds of women finding girl power through stand up comedy? Kim and Jackie chat with Lisa Sundstedt, the Madame of Comedy and creator of Pretty Funny Women.
Lisa Sundstedt is an accomplished stand up comic, writer, singer, actress and producer. Her first professional gig was singing and dancing at Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. She spent another few months singing on an Italian cruise ship, followed by four years on the road with the infamous 50’s rock group “Sha Na Na”. In 1995, some jackass at the Hollywood Improv told her, “pretty women can’t be funny!” so Lisa became a stand-up comic and created “Pretty, Funny Women”…the longest running all female comedy show in the world. Her career took off and she immediately landed herself a big time Hollywood agent, a holding deal with Tri Star Television, and the Montreal Comedy Festival where she shared the stage with Ray Romano. She then booked the Chicago Comedy Festival, where she shared a room with Doug Stanhope. She has written on shows like Girls Behaving Badly, The Chelsea Handler Show and Chelsea Lately, Coach Charming for TLC and was a producer on Parental Discretion with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor for Nick Mom. She has done hundreds of national commercials and voice-overs, including campaigns for Vons/Safeway, Mattel, Ford, Kraft and more.
Lisa produces live “Pretty Funny Women” shows at The Comedy Store in Hollywood, Flappers in Burbank & currently teaches stand up comedy classes for women in Los Angeles. Some of the comics who have been featured on past PFW shows include Chelsea Handler, Tig Notaro, Retta, Maria Bamford, Natasha Leggero, Sheri Shepherd and many, many more. Over the past eight years, Lisa has written jokes for and taught stand up comedy to over 600 young, female, up and coming comedy stars of tomorrow. Her hobbies include gambling and, well…that’s it.
